The EU is preparing to revise the refugee convention
The European Union plans to revise the post-war refugee convention with the aim of changing migration policy. This initiative could become one of the most significant changes in recent decades.
'It should be noted that these principles were developed after the end of World War II and characterized by a completely different situation than today', the document states.
The convention, signed in 1951 and ratified by 144 countries, obliges countries not to return refugees to countries where their lives or freedom are threatened.
However, in recent decades, European countries have avoided fulfilling these obligations and have tried to deny asylum to millions of seekers.
The new document provides for the expedited deportation of asylum seekers whose claims have been denied, as well as the deportation of criminals who hold refugee status. This could lead to changes in the convention supported by countries such as the United Kingdom and the United States.
Requests for asylum in the EU continue to rise, leading to increased popularity for nationalist and far-right populist parties.
Many asylum seekers whose refugee status has been denied commit crimes and remain in EU countries under legal protection.
The refugee crisis of 2015 brought this issue to the forefront in Europe when millions of illegal migrants crossed the borders of the EU seeking asylum in Northern and Western European countries.
