The U.S. Senate has confirmed Matthew Whitaker as the country's ambassador to NATO. Politico reports this. His confirmation came after a prolonged protest by Democratic Senator Cory Booker against the actions of the Trump administration.
This candidate for the position came as a surprise to allies, as he did not have much experience in foreign policy and security.
However, it is expected that Matthew Whitaker will support Trump's policy regarding increasing military spending among NATO members. He insists that all alliance countries must fulfill their defense commitments and allocate no less than 2% of GDP for these purposes.
Despite Trump's doubts about the principle of mutual security in NATO, Whitaker stated that the administration remains committed to this principle.
